Melissa headshot.jpeg

Melissa is a passionate, professional teacher with nearly 20 years of experience teaching art. She has worked with every age in a wide range of media, including paint, sculpture, printmaking, and mixed media art. Trained in both classical and contemporary art techniques, Melissa combines technical expertise with a broad understanding of art history and art education theory. She has taught high school art for eight years, and community and private classes for many more. Melissa is also an experienced curriculum developer.

Philosophy

Contrary to popular belief, art is not something magic that only the talented few can access: rather, EVERYONE can learn to create art.

I teach using a skills-based approach, meaning you develop new skills applicable to a range of projects. My students create unique artworks rather than carbon-copy projects. Lessons include problem-solving strategies and creative development.

Did I mention that art is a lot of fun? Come explore this exciting discipline and see for yourself!

Testimonials

“I wanted to say that I really enjoy your online class. You are so organized and very knowledgeable. I really like the handouts that you provide prior to class as they give and good overview of what we’ll be doing. I enjoy studying them ahead of time.”

“I like the relaxed yet well organized atmosphere of your class. It’s great to see your demonstrations of techniques, etc and also to have time to practise and ask questions.”

“I really like learning about colour and the history of colour development, as in your discussion about the development of cadmium yellow, for example.”

“I usually paint using acrylics so I felt somewhat intimated when trying to use watercolours. After our sessions online I feel much more comfortable using watercolours and feel confident in using the techniques I have learned from you. Thank you again!”
